The first 6 months are a whirlwind, and newborn sleep can feel impossibly confusing.

Here is the truth: most newborn sleep "problems" are not actually problems. They are normal. Newborns are biologically programmed to wake frequently, feed around the clock, and sleep in short bursts. Day/night confusion, contact napping, feeding to sleep: these are all part of how tiny humans are wired.

But knowing something is normal does not make 3am any easier. You still need to function. You still need to eat, shower, and occasionally sit down without a baby on your chest. That is where we come in.

We do not "fix" your newborn. We support you through the fourth trimester with evidence-based guidance, realistic expectations, and a plan that works with your baby's biology, not against it. Everything we recommend aligns with NHS and Lullaby Trust safe sleep guidelines.

Common newborn sleep challenges

Why newborn sleep needs a different approach

Newborn sleep is fundamentally different from older baby sleep. Before 4 months, your baby does not have mature sleep cycles. They spend most of their sleep time in active (REM) sleep, which is lighter and more easily disrupted. This is actually protective and it is one reason why the "sleep training" methods that work for older babies are not appropriate here.

Instead of trying to change your baby's sleep biology, we work with it. We focus on building healthy foundations: a safe sleep environment, age-appropriate awake times (measured in minutes at this stage, not hours), and gentle settling techniques that give your baby the best chance of developing good sleep patterns as their brain matures.

We also focus on you. New parenthood is overwhelming, and sleep deprivation is real. Part of our support is helping you manage your own rest, set realistic expectations, and stop comparing your baby to that one on Instagram who "sleeps 12 hours."

The fourth trimester: what nobody tells you

The first 12 weeks after birth are sometimes called the fourth trimester. Your baby has gone from a warm, dark, constantly-moving environment where they were fed around the clock to a bright, still, quiet world where they have to ask for everything. It is a massive transition.

During this time, contact napping, feeding to sleep, and frequent waking are not habits that need breaking. They are your baby's way of coping with the biggest change they will ever experience. Understanding this does not make the exhaustion disappear, but it does change how you approach it.

Our role in the fourth trimester is not to impose a schedule or push for independence too early. It is to help you find small, evidence-based adjustments that make your days more manageable while your baby adjusts to life outside the womb.

Safe sleep is at the heart of everything we do

Every recommendation we make follows current Lullaby Trust and NHS safe sleep guidelines. This is non-negotiable.

We will always advise that your baby sleeps on their back, in a clear cot with no pillows, toys, bumpers, or loose bedding. We recommend room sharing for the first 6 months and keeping the room between 16 and 20 degrees. We never recommend weighted sleep sacks, amber teething necklaces, or any product that does not meet current safety standards.

If you are co-sleeping, we do not judge. We help you reduce the risks by following the evidence-based guidelines from UNICEF and the Lullaby Trust. Our job is to keep your baby safe, not to tell you what kind of parent to be.

Common questions about newborn sleep support

Is it too early to get sleep help for a newborn?

Not at all. We don't do any form of sleep training with newborns. What we do is help you understand your baby's sleep biology, set up a safe and supportive sleep environment, and build gentle foundations that make the coming months easier. Think of it as expert guidance through the fourth trimester, not fixing a problem.

Do you recommend sleep training for babies under 6 months?

No. Newborn sleep is biologically disorganised and that is completely normal. Before 4 months, there is very little you can 'train'. What you can do is lay the groundwork: safe sleep environment, age-appropriate wake windows, and gentle settling techniques that give your baby the best chance of developing healthy sleep patterns naturally.

My newborn only sleeps on me. Is that a problem?

Contact napping is biologically normal in the early weeks. Your baby spent 9 months inside you and the outside world is a big adjustment. It only becomes something to address if it is unsustainable for you. We can help you gently encourage more independent naps when you and your baby are ready, without any crying.

Can you help with the 4-month sleep regression?

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons families reach out. The 4-month regression is actually a permanent change in your baby's sleep architecture. Their sleep cycles mature from newborn patterns to adult-like cycles, which means they wake more between cycles. We help you navigate this transition with a plan that works for your family.

Is your advice NHS and Lullaby Trust aligned?

Always. Every piece of advice we give follows current Lullaby Trust safe sleep guidelines and NHS recommendations. We recommend room sharing for the first 6 months, back sleeping, a clear cot, and appropriate room temperature. Safe sleep is non-negotiable in everything we do.

What is included in a newborn sleep package?

Every package includes a bespoke sleep plan built for your baby's age (in weeks, because it matters at this stage), feeding method, and your family's goals. You also get daily WhatsApp check-ins where we review how things are going and adjust the plan. Support hours are 6:30am to 9pm, 7 days a week. The 2-week package is £250 and the 4-week package is £350.
